The Inspiring History of Sing Gospel: From Humble Beginnings to Uplifting Audiences Across London

Sing Gospel has been spreading the joy of gospel music throughout London and beyond for over a decade. Founded in 2010, the choir has grown from a small gathering of passionate singers to a dynamic community choir and professional session choir with a reputation for vibrant performances and community spirit. Here’s a look back at the inspiring journey of Sing Gospel and its commitment to bringing people together through the power of gospel music.

It all began when Josh Cadman, a member of the London Community Gospel Choir and emerging choir director, teamed up with Bert Routledge, a serial musician and entrepreneur. The two shared a vision to create a space where people of all backgrounds could experience the uplifting energy of gospel music. After being introduced by Reverend David Brammer, they began hosting gospel music workshops across West London. These early workshops were a hit, culminating in big concerts where the power and passion of gospel music brought communities together.

In 2013, Sing Gospel took a step forward and started rehearsing weekly at St. Mary’s Church in Acton, forming a larger, more dedicated choir. The community choir quickly gained strength and popularity, performing at local events and growing to over 90 members. A pivotal moment came in 2016 when Sing Gospel became a finalist in the BBC Gospel Choir of the Year Competition, with their performance broadcast on BBC One. This exposure was a game-changer, drawing in more members and opening up new opportunities to perform at prestigious events.

The success led to the formation of a Session Choir, a smaller, auditioned group made up of the choir’s most experienced members. With this elite group, Sing Gospel has performed at events such as the London Palladium and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. By 2019, the choir had expanded to over 100 members and moved to Christ the Saviour Primary School in Ealing. With a newly added live band, rehearsals became a blend of music, energy, and community.

When the world faced COVID-19 in 2020, Sing Gospel didn’t let the challenges stop the music. Rehearsals moved online, culminating in a live virtual concert that brought together voices from all over. By 2021, the choir returned to in-person rehearsals and is now back in Acton Baptist Church, where it continues to grow.

Today, Sing Gospel not only performs gospel concerts but also hosts gospel workshops across the UK, making a difference in schools, businesses, and community groups. With every performance and rehearsal, Sing Gospel continues to spread the uplifting spirit of gospel music and bring joy to audiences near and far.
